Using KiwiWrite Offline for Secure Testing
KiwiWrite can be used without an Internet connection during secure testing. Before using KiwiWrite offline, a staff member must first log in to KiwiWrite and open the file the student will use. Once the file has been opened, students may continue working without an Internet connection.
Before Test Day
We recommend performing a practice run before the day of testing so that staff become familiar with the offline workflow and verify that their devices are configured correctly.

If using a Chromebook, verify that downloaded files will be saved to the local device rather than only to Google Drive.

If you plan to print directly to paper (instead of downloading a PDF), the printer must be physically connected to the testing device (for example, by USB). Network printing is not available while offline, so we recommend testing your printing configuration before the day of testing.
Preparing for the Test
Complete the following steps while the device is connected to the Internet and before the test begins, but after the student has finished any other work in KiwiWrite on the device.

Log in to the student's KiwiWrite account.

Open the file the student will use (either a blank KiwiWrite file or the test PDF).

If desired, rename the file to help identify the student's work.

Confirm that the correct file is open.

Disconnect the Internet connection before giving the device to the student.
Using KiwiWrite While Offline
While the device is offline, students may continue using all KiwiWrite math entry, text entry, and drawing tools normally.
Actions that require access to the KiwiWrite web server are not available while offline. Examples include:

Creating a new file

Opening an existing file

Renaming the current file

Any action selected from the Profile menu
If one of these actions is selected accidentally, KiwiWrite may display an error message or appear to stop responding while it waits for an Internet connection. If this occurs, click Cancel to return to the student's work
Saving or Printing Student Work
When the student has completed the test:

Select File Actions → Download → PDF to save a PDF to the local device.

Or select Print to print directly to a physically connected printer.
When printing, the system print dialog opens in a separate browser tab. After printing, return to the original KiwiWrite tab.
Managing Student Files After Testing
If the student completed the test in a blank KiwiWrite file, and should not have later access to the file, then close the KiwiWrite browser tab before reconnecting the device to the Internet. This discards the temporary offline changes so they are not synchronized to the KiwiWrite servers when the network connection is restored. The original blank file that existed before testing will remain in the student's KiwiWrite account.
If the student completed the test by writing on a PDF and the PDF should not remain stored in KiwiWrite, reconnect the device to the Internet, open File Actions, and select Permanently Delete to immediately remove the PDF from the KiwiWrite servers.
